Week 6 Stories of Service

A Friendly Phone Call

I have a friend who suffers from depression as well as some other health issues. I call her every week to see how she is doing. The beginning of our phone conversation is never very good. By the end of our conversation, she seems "up-lifted" and very appreciative of my phone call. I believe that a simple phone call can make a difference in someone's life.

Missing Mail?

I was surprised to find eight pieces of mail in my mailbox that were not mine. I got in my car and delivered them to the correct address.

Grocery Store Help

I was struggling to reach a product on the top shelf at the grocery store. Another customer said, "Can I help you?" I said, "You sure can." He did get the product for me and I was very grateful.

Saving Containers

My friend's church has a lot of social events where food is served. They always have left-overs so need containers to put the left-overs in for people to take home. I save containers for my friend's church.

Kind Customer Service

One day I went to a Hallmark store and purchased two identical birthday cards. ($1.99 each) The following week I went to the same Hallmark store to buy three more of the same card. When checking out, the clerk discovered that one card was $1.99 and two cards were $2.59. She called the store manager to come to the register. After telling him that I bought two of these same cards for $1.99 each the previous week, he said I could have the cards priced at $2.59 each for $1.99. What a kind and considerate way to treat me as a customer! Apparently, Hallmark raised the price of the most recent shipment of cards. The store manager was doing a service to me by letting me purchase the three cards at the same price.

SOTV Serving -- Melissa

Today my son took a couple hours out of his spring break to clean classrooms at SOTV. Now the GodZone preschoolers and others can learn and praise God in a healthy environment.

Even After Death -- Marion

When my sister, Kathy, first moved to California to teach music, she lived with Celia. Celia Snow was an elderly widow whose only living relative was a grand daughter on the East Coast. After a few years, Kathy married but remained close to Celia and visited her often, even after she developed Alzheimer's. When she died Celia was buried next to Mr. Snow who was her second husband. A few months later, the grand daughter discovered Celia had wanted to be buried with her first husband so arranged to have her body exhumed. At the time of reburial, Kathy brought a church hymnal and her flute to the cemetery. With only four people present, she played Celia's favorite hymns and read the Service Rite of Burial - truly an act of service even after death!

Birthday Cards

I wrote notes in six birthday cards and sent them to six of my friends.

Helping a Friend

Last year a friend of mine lost his house to foreclosure. He is retired. The only source of income is his Social Security check. This is not enough money to pay the rent, buy food, put gas in the car, pay for auto insurance and health insurance, give money to the church, etc.

I provide him with food, give him money for gas for his car and put money in his contribution envelopes for church.

Oftentimes, I sacrifice so that I can help my friend.

Each time I come to church, I bring a bag of food for the Food Shelf.
